Cape to Cape: A Coastal Traverse
135 kilometres of limestone cliffs and headwind — gear notes from four days on the WA coast.
The Cape to Cape track doesn't have a single hard climb on it. What it has instead is four straight days of headwind off the Indian Ocean, which is a different kind of difficult.
Salt air is brutal on zips and hardware. Everything metal on our test kit got a rinse every evening, and even then a couple of zip pulls were sticky by day three.
Pack for wind, not cold. The temperature rarely dropped below 14°C, but a 30-knot onshore breeze for six hours straight will find every gap in your layering just as effectively as alpine cold does.
Worth doing in one push if your knees allow it — the limestone cliff sections at dawn on day two are the best trail running we've done all year.
