Caring for Technical Fabrics So They Last
A few small habits add seasons to your kit — and keep the wicking and the waterproofing actually working.
Most technical fabric doesn't fail outright. It just slowly stops doing the thing you bought it for, usually because of how it's washed rather than how hard it's been run.
Fabric softener is the single biggest culprit we see. It coats wicking fibres in a film that kills moisture transfer — the exact thing you paid for when you bought the garment.
Cold wash, no softener, line dry is the whole policy. For anything with a DWR coating, a short tumble on low heat every few washes actually reactivates the coating better than air drying alone.
None of this is complicated. It's just different to how most people do laundry, which is exactly why it gets skipped.
